Wall-mounted split system air conditioners are the cooling workhorses of Adelaide apartments, rental units, living rooms, and bedrooms. When working normally, they operate quietly and efficiently. However, when minor faults go unresolved, they can quickly escalate into disruptive breakdowns.
Here are the most frequent split system problems we diagnose across Adelaide and what they mean for your unit:
1. Water Leaking Down the Wall
This is the single most common emergency call we receive during summer. When air conditioning cools, moisture condenses on the indoor aluminium coil and drips into a plastic drain tray, which drains outdoors through a 20mm PVC pipe.
Why it happens: Dust that slips past the air filter mixes with moisture, forming a jelly-like algae bloom inside the drain pan. Eventually, the drain chokes, causing water to spill over the front fascia and down your wall. In other cases, the drain hose has lost its downward fall or has been crushed outside.
Solution: Turn off the unit immediately to avoid shorting the circuit board. A technician will clear the drain using compressed nitrogen or a wet-vac and treat the tray with anti-fungal tablets.
2. Rhythmic Rattling or Squeaking Sounds
Unlike the gentle rushing of air, mechanical squeaking, vibrating, or clicking sounds inside the room indicate an issue with the cylindrical cross-flow barrel fan:
- Imbalance from Mould: Uneven buildup of dust and mould along the fan blades throws the wheel out of dynamic balance, creating high-speed vibrations.
- Worn Blower Bearing: The rubber sleeve bearing on the non-drive side of the fan barrel can wear dry, causing a persistent high-pitched squeak.
- Louver Stepper Motor: A continuous clicking noise when the unit turns on often means the motorized swing louver has broken internal plastic gear teeth.
3. Blinking Timer Light or Fault Codes
When a split system detects abnormal operating conditions, it shuts down the outdoor compressor and blinks an LED light (typically the Timer or Operation lamp).
Common Causes: An open-circuit thermistor (temperature sensor), an outdoor fan motor failure, communication loss between indoor and outdoor PCBs, or an inverter compressor over-current. Our technicians interpret the exact diagnostic code using specialized technical tables to replace the failed electronic sensor or module.
4. Musty, Vinegar, or Stale Odours
If your split system smells like stale gym socks or vinegar when you turn it on, biological contamination has settled on the indoor coil and behind the barrel fan. The dark, moist interior of an air conditioner provides an ideal habitat for mould and bacteria. A professional deep clean and coil sanitisation restores fresh, healthy indoor air quality.
5. Ice Forming on the Indoor Unit Coils
If you lift the front cover and see frost or solid ice coating the aluminium fins, airflow has dropped below critical levels or the system has lost refrigerant. As the ice melts, it will overwhelm the drain pan and cause major water dripping. Turn off the unit, let the ice melt, and schedule a diagnostic leak inspection.
